Disability and the Inclusion Process: Conceptual Issues from Perspective of Italian Special Education

This volume offers an original exploration of the fundamental elements of Special Education theory, reconstructing its deepest underlying themes and projecting it toward the future. The journey toward empowerment for people with disabilities that emerges from this process compels humanity to confront its own limitations and fears, yet at the same time enables it to increasingly define-in scientific, sociocultural, relational, and material terms-the nature of its humanity and civilization. In light of its own interdisciplinary nature, Special Education takes on heuristic value in understanding educational and ethical-anthropological issues, as well as in the actions aimed at supporting and accompanying people with disabilities, by overcoming the prejudices and contradictions present in many current practices and in the ongoing public and scientific debate. The challenge lies in creating a fully inclusive society, where people with disabilities-just like anyone else-can pursue their own life plan and actively participate as citizens.
