Dimension No. 4: A Father’s World

A short work of literary nonfiction about a father, a son, and the strange world created by Lewy body dementia.Bernard Bradley begins seeing strange figures in and around his apartment. His son Brendan, who is visiting for the weekend, discovers that these figures are as real to his dad as he is. Brendan, through his father's vivid descriptions of his hallucinations, finds himself entering a world that is populated by an Eleven Foot Man, a shy creature named Frisky, Trash People hiding inside steel cans, a glowing Wreath Lady, and a leather chair that inflates into Smokin' Joe Frazier. At once eerie, funny, and tender, Demention No. 4 is not an attempt to explain away Bernard's visions or reduce him to his diagnosis; it is a record of how he meets an altered reality with humor, curiosity, and compassion-and how a son discovers that his father is still the same man despite his world having changed around him.
