Delinearization: Rethinking decision and action in a nonlinear world

Our world is increasingly complex, interconnected, and unpredictable. Yet most institutions still respond through uniform rules, rigid procedures, and centralized control. This essay explores why linear solutions so often fail in nonlinear environments-and how they can even create the very problems they were meant to solve.Drawing on military operations, education, industry, and public policy, Nicolas Auboin proposes a different model: coordination through shared purpose rather than imposed conformity. In this model, autonomy does not mean disorder, and hierarchy does not disappear. Its role changes: the center no longer controls every action but provides direction, meaning, and clear boundaries.Delinearization is not a management trend. It is a demanding approach to collective action, based on judgment, responsibility, operational thinking, and mature leadership.
