Dark Matter is het eerste album met nieuw materiaal van Randy Newman in negen jaar tijd. Het album is de opvolger van het succesvolle Harps And Angels uit 2008 en werd volledig opgenomen in Los Angeles, samen met Mitchell Froom, Lenny Waronker, en David Boucher.Het album bevat negen nummers, waaronder het in 2016 uitgebrachte Putin en nummers over de Kennedy broers, Sonny Boy Williamson, wetenschap versus religie, liefde en verlies en vele andere onderwerpen. Newman zegt het volgende over Dark Matter: "If there is anything consistent about the songs, there is often more than one voice, in the big ones, and it's different for me, a difficult thing to bring off, to make it comprehensible, I think it works. They cover more ground than most songs do and portray a number of different characters. Audiences are smart. They'll understand the songs. I hope they like them as well.
