DARK HEART

The backdrop to this murder mystery is British Columbia during the Vietnam War. The intertwining of the lives of draft dodgers welcomed to Canada evokes Parmenter's personal experience. It is the era of communes, hippies, lost souls, discontents and free love. It is the story of Quentin Savage's struggle to survive as a homosexual to find true love and retain his dignity. He has an uncanny instinct for discerning evil. There is the touch of magical realism as in many of Parmenter's books. Quentin's escape from the RCMP and FBI takes him through the backwoods landscape of B.C. Is he the dark heart who commits the horrific crime? His capture by an obsessed FBI agent takes you into the mind of those pursuing Americans they consider traitors and cowards refusing to fight to "defend democracy." Dark Heart is historic fiction, inspired by many of the characters Parmenter met during this important time in American history and in the author's life.
