IN THE REDParis in the early nineties. Things aren't looking up for the heroin-addicted narrator of this violent, toxic tale. His girlfriend Julie, has disappeared. Searching for her, he comes across the dead body of his dealer Coyote and becomes witness to the murders of Cedric, then Coralie by two shadowy figures. As violence escalates, he runs over the Man in black who supposedly has news of Julie. Saved in extremis by the creepy Le Strange, he sets out on a horrifying nighttime road movie. During his desperate escape, the narrator attempts another trip, this time inside himself, to try to understand his addiction, his lost love and the forces at work behind them. Memories shoot through his brain at accelerated speed: birth, childhood, youth, the romantic political activist he once was who tried to use poetry as a weapon and who was crazy about literature and rock music.. The Man in black turns out to be double trouble, an evil twin emerging out of the night of the apocalypse for an ultimate confrontation. And what about Julie? Did she really leave him? Only the Man in black knows and the truth will come out in a final struggle in a squat rampant with orange rats, in a blockhaus full of skinheads, in a slaughterhouse... Theirry Matteï is a journalist. Dans le rouge is his first novel.
