D. Inez De Castro

D. Inez De Castro is a historical novella by Stéphanie Félicité Genlis, originally published in 1837. Set against a backdrop of Portuguese history, the story intricately weaves elements of romance, tragedy, and political intrigue. Genlis masterfully portrays the ill-fated love between Dom Pedro, the Prince of Portugal, and Inez de Castro, a Galician noblewoman. Their passionate affair, conducted in secret due to Inez's lower social standing and the machinations of the royal court, ultimately leads to devastating consequences. This novella provides a glimpse into the complexities of royal life, the power of forbidden love, and the ruthless ambition of those seeking to control the throne. Genlis's vivid prose and attention to historical detail bring the era to life, offering readers an engaging and poignant tale. D. Inez De Castro remains a compelling example of historical romance, capturing the imagination with its enduring themes of love, betrayal, and sacrifice. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
