Stolen as a child from St. Louis, a little girl is raised by mountain men in the Rockies, Shelby learns to live the life. Raised a boy, thinking as a man, despite being born a girl, Shelby sees nothing wrong with loving a woman; after all, his mentors all take wives, why can't he? His first wife, a chieftain's daughter, teaches him how to love as a two-spirit, but jealousies outside their commitment to each other leads to her death. Shelby is inconsolable and goes on a rampage that gives him the moniker 'Crazy Woman.' His second wife is White, and accepting of the help this woman-man offers and takes his hand in marriage. Learning to love a woman is something new to Allison, but she accepts the challenge. Living in the Rockies, trapping, hunting, and making do is a life not many could manage. Times are changing, trapping is slowly petering out, and Shelby must make decisions that will allow him to live the life he loves in the mountains he calls his home.
