Copper is an essential trace element that plays a pivotal role in numerous physiological processes, including enzymatic activity, redox balance, and cellular signaling. Tight regulation of copper homeostasis is therefore critical, as both deficiency and excess can disrupt systemic and cellular functions. This book explores the mechanisms governing copper balance, its transport dynamics, and the pathological consequences of its dysregulation. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of copper in major disease contexts, including neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, cancer development and therapy through mechanisms like cuproptosis, and metabolic complications of diabetes. Additionally, the impact of copper on immune function is examined, highlighting how imbalances influence both innate and adaptive immunity, as well as immune cell composition and proliferation.
