Confluence of Consciousness

They thought they were testing a better kind of virtual reality. Six people, a room, a prototype that fogged at the edges; and then, without anyone quite deciding it had happened, they were inside one another. Not reading about a stranger's grief. Not imagining it. Living it and coming back changed. The world would learn to call it the Merge. Confluence of Consciousness follows the few who went first: a scientist, a poet, an artist, a philosopher, an ethicist, an explorer. Through everything it asked of them, and everything it gave. The slow end of the loneliness that had always defined us. The harder question of what a self even is, once the wall around it can be opened. And a reckoning that comes, as these things do, because good people stayed quiet a little too long. What they found was neither a rescue nor a catastrophe. It was something more human, and harder to name: the story of people becoming something there is not yet a word for, told from the inside, by those who were there.
