Comic Books in Tunisia: Between Concepts and Constraints

Despite its proximity to painting and cinema, the comic book in Tunisia remains confined to a few concepts and ideas. With rare exceptions, this medium still struggles to find its place. Clearly, it seems to be searching for an identity, originality, a target audience-in short, a niche! At first glance, Tunisian comics suffer from the same issues as any work intended for publication: given the lack of a genuine market for books in general-and for specialized children's publications in particular-what is the relationship between the comic book author and market constraints? Although this thesis will, within certain limits, investigate the material aspects of comic book production, our focus is more specifically on the creative aspect, examining the concepts, symbols, colors, visual imagery, and sources of inspiration that can be employed.
