Chausseestraße 131 is the second LP by East German Liedermacher and poet Wolf Biermann, released in 1968, and falls within the genres of Liedermacher and protest music. It marks his first solo album after a collaboration with Wolfgang Neuss, created under severe restrictions as Biermann had been blacklisted by the Socialist Unity Party, barring him from official performances or releases through East Germany's music monopoly. Unable to access professional studios, he recorded the entire album in his apartment at Chausseestraße 131 using a simple Grundig tape recorder and a smuggled Sennheiser omnidirectional microphone from West Germany, resulting in a raw sound captured over 40 minutes where ambient street traffic faintly echoes in the background.This clandestine production underscores the album's legendary status as a defiant act of artistic resistance amid political oppression. Biermann's poetic lyrics and guitar accompaniment channel sharp social critique, embodying the spirit of protest music from a divided Germany. Privately circulated at first, it later gained wider recognition, reflecting Biermann's unyielding voice against authoritarianism despite the rudimentary recording conditions.
