The essays cover the sociology and economics of slavery, illustrating the dynamic relations between modes of production and social life. But it is the superstructure of slave systems that is the focus of a number of essays highlighting the debate on race and colour relations, health and morality, religion, recreational culture, women, family organization and kinship patterns. The selection also focuses on maturing anti-slavery consciousness and politics which are addressed as part of the discourse on social control and resistance.
