Career Coaching for migrants: Intercultural Competence in and Counselling

This research project examined the specific characteristics of career coaching for migrants. The focus of the research was on the differences and similarities between migrants' educational attainment and their career aspirations. Furthermore, the study examined the role that career coaching plays in the job application process and career choice. In addition, the limitations of coaching migrants were examined in greater detail and compared with career coaching for Austrian clients. Proficiency in the German language is of fundamental importance for migrants and a key prerequisite when choosing a career. It was found that differences and similarities in career coaching stem more from social factors and personality-related characteristics than from origin, religion or traditions. It was also found that migrants possess strong networking skills, some of which have a positive impact on their access to the labour market.
