This book, for the first time, classifies and systematically organizes the Dunhuang materia medica (herbal) literature. It introduces the methodology of codicology (manuscript studies), conducting a detailed analysis of the Dunhuang herbal manuscripts from perspectives such as variant characters (common script forms), scribal practices, and the use of colored annotations and mixed ink writing (often described as "red and black intermingled"). Furthermore, the book connects the Dunhuang materia medica texts with related herbal works, carrying out research on the reconstruction (compilation of lost texts) and critical collation of relevant herbal literature.
