A wealthy widow from one of New England's most powerful families finds her sheltered world shattered when she befriends an Italian immigrant-a gentle fish peddler whose quiet dignity and radical ideals challenge everything she has been taught to believe. As political hysteria grips the nation, she watches in horror as he and a fellow immigrant are swept up in a murder charge fueled not by evidence but by fear and prejudice.Caught between the drawing rooms of the elite and the streets of the working poor, she risks her family's name and her own safety to fight for two men she believes are innocent. But in a city poisoned by xenophobia and class hatred, justice proves elusive-and the machinery of the state grinds relentlessly toward a terrible conclusion.
