Beneath the Arbor

After a hurricane tears through Kanperen, Jean Robert stands in the ruins of his yam field, unable to promise his young niece Yvenie that anything will grow again. Relief trucks arrive with rice, vouchers, and a plan for recovery. But Carine-a formidable Madan Sara-knows that survival without dignity can become another kind of disaster.Together with farmers, traders, elders, and children, they create Marché Lavwa Nou-the Market of Our Voice-a place where every harvest carries the name of the hands and soil that produced it. What begins with six rows of rescued crops grows into a quiet revolution, connecting villages through seeds, knowledge, and mutual protection. Then success brings pressure. School meals are suspended. Hunger divides neighbors. Drought tests inherited wisdom. And powerful outsiders offer money, recognition, and security-if Kanperen will surrender control of what it created. As the years pass and a new generation steps forward, the community must decide what can be traded, what must be forgiven, and what can never be sold.Beneath the Arbor is a lyrical, deeply human novel of post-hurricane Haiti, food sovereignty, inheritance, and collective courage. It is a story of ordinary people building a future with their own hands-and discovering that the deepest roots are the ones carried between them.
