And a Year Went By is a unique collection of 52 black and white photographs and poems recording the story of the final year of the 1980s through the eyes of two artists. Once a week photographer Richard Madden and poet Stephen Clark went to places and events which they found compelling and which seemed to say some thing about the times in which we live - from a press conference with Mick Jagger to a nuclear power station, from the Marchioness disaster to a memorial service at the Cenotaph, from the world chess championships to the Chelsea Flower Show, from Eton's 4th June celebrations to a three-minute silence for John McCarthy on the third anniversary of his captivity.By combining their two art forms, the artists have created an intriguing third which captures the spirit of a decade which is only now beginning to be fully understood. And A Year Went By combines the political and the personal , the intimate and the public, the extraordinary and the everyday. Funny, bleak, provocative and joyful, it is a fascinating collection which explores many of the issues, feelings and events that have become part of our lives.
