This book aims to present the cultural history of ancient India, with a special focus on hairstyles and costumes. Although many traditional styles continue to survive in rural India, clothing and appearance have evolved over time. Ancient texts, sculptures, and paintings provide valuable insights into the fabrics, colours, designs, and fashions of different periods. Since art reflects the tastes and ideals of society, the study of hairstyles and costumes helps us understand various aspects of ancient Indian life. This book examines these traditions from 3300 BCE to the eighth century CE through literary and artistic evidence.
