Enzymes are bio-catalysts which effect transformation of substrates to products with high specificity. One of the key factors in the widespread application of enzymes in modern technologies is the development of enzyme immobilization tech­ niques, which overcome certain practical, functional and economic con­ straints. In the search for better analytical precision, accuracy, and versatility, chemists and researchers are constantly experimenting with new and unusual techniques. One such successful technique that has been developed recently involves the use of enzymes as biocatalysts. Here, the enzymes are stabilized and packed into small columns to produce immobilized enzyme reactors. With the wide range of enzymes available it is possible to design the reactor to produce a specific product which is amenable to a chosen detection system.
