In the face of environmental degradation and its harmful effects on humans and other living beings, a global awareness has emerged. Various tools and mechanisms have been developed, but the most popular and best-known remain 'environmental and social impact assessments' (ESIA). An ESIA analyses the different options for a project, facilitates the identification and assessment of its positive and negative impacts, and finally defines measures to mitigate and eliminate these impacts in order to ensure the project is environmentally sound. Chad, a landlocked country in Central Africa, has, as part of its development - which involves the exploitation and management of its natural resource potential - incorporated this tool into its institutional and regulatory framework to better protect its environment and commit to a process of sustainable development. However, the implementation of this mechanism in Chad faces controversies linked, on the one hand, to the standards governing it and, on the other, to the institutions themselves.
