MODSIM (Water Quantity Module) is a river basin management decision support system developed by Colorado State University, USA. It is designed as a computer-aided tool for short-term water management, long-term operational planning, drought analysis, and resolving conflicts among urban, agricultural, and environmental water users. MODSIM represents complex river systems using a network flow structure consisting of nodes (reservoirs, demand points, junctions) and links (rivers and canals), integrated with a graphical user interface and optimization model. In this study, MODSIM is applied to the Pravara River, a tributary of the Godavari River, to evaluate the impact of the newly constructed Nilwande Dam on river flow and irrigation shortages. The basin includes the Bhandardara Dam (Wilson Dam), which supplies irrigation, drinking, and industrial water through left and right bank canals. Due to non-perennial flow and increasing demand, water shortages occur frequently. MODSIM helps simulate pre- and post-dam conditions, estimate irrigation deficits, and optimize water allocation for sustainable basin management.
