Boston, Massachusetts - 1770 My Dear Friend, As Avery and I began building our family in Boston, the Crown tightened its grip on the colonies with unjust taxes, strangled trade, and demands no free people should be forced to bear. Avery and his fellow Sons of Liberty would not yield to laws made without their consent-or to a king who treated property rights as privileges to be revoked. The struggle turned violent when a desperate clash over the ship Liberty swelled into a townwide riot. The King answered with force, sending British troops into Boston. Tension between the soldiers and the Sons of Liberty soon erupted into bloodshed. Lives were lost, hearts were broken, and rifts tore through families and friendships that may never mend. Wading between liberty and death, I wondered how we might survive a king and a people each determined to prevail in all cases whatsoever. -Clover North
