Bol Partner Daughter of a missionary, Claude Njiké-Bergeret was born and raised in Cameroon where she lived until she was sixteen and then moved back to France. Eighteen years later, she chose to put aside her education andWestern values and return to her childhood village and its promise of a more harmonious existence. Upon the death of her husband, the village chief, she decides to continue her African adventure and set up home on a previously uninhabited parcel of land on the banks of the Noun River, 25 kilometers from Bangangté in North-West Cameroon. There, by herself, she begins cultivating peanuts, manioc and a variant of the sweet potato, and is soon joined by her children and many other young adults enthusiastic at the idea of cultivating this virgin land. A shovel in one hand and a machete in the other, she aspires each day to live by and with the land. Her whole education had prepared her for a life in the comfort and abundance of the city and the veneration of progress but Claude Njiké-Bergeret chose instead a life in the unpredictable, sometimes harsh, wilderness. A generous land, nevertheless, with many lessons to teach. Through the values she learned with the Bangangté people, she gained precious knowledge and respect for the earth.
