The population of the Ibibio people stands at approximately 6,000,000 as of 1993. They are the inhabitants of the land situated in the south east of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Ibibioland is bordered in the east by the Rivers State, in the west by Bayelsa State, in the north by Uruan River and Calabar River bordering the Cross River State, and Imo State at Itu River near Arochuku; in the south by the Atlantic Ocean forked at the Ikot Abasi River and Akwa (Qua) Ibom River.The homeland of the Ibibios is the Akwa Ibom State, nickmed, Land of Promise, which has an area of 8,412 square kilometers located at latitude 4.32 and 5.53 north, and at longitude 7.25 and 8.25 east. The climate of the state comprises the dry season, beginning from November to March, and the wet season, coming from April through October. Annual sunshine rangesfrom 1400 to 1500 hours with an average temperature of 23-31c. Mean annual rainfall is 2200 mm in the north and 35 mm in the south of the state. Akwa Ibom is a State, deriving her name after Akwa Ibom River, which describes and defines the territory.
