Bol In an era dominated by political polarization and legislative gridlock, Across the Aisle offers an inside look to a time when political collaboration was an essential tool for effective governance. Bringing together 41 firsthand accounts and commentaries from former legislative leaders, department directors, policy strategists, and journalists, this collection demonstrates how Michigan's political leaders repeatedly checked party loyalty at the door to foster a civil democracy.Organized into six categories-Effective Leadership, Unusual Alliances, The Importance of Networking, Key Accomplishments, Memorable Mentors and Friends, and The Fourth Estate-Across the Aisle details the pragmatic mechanics behind landmark state policy. Readers will discover:The 1992 Shared Power Experiment: How Democratic Co-Speaker Curtis Hertel and Republican Co-Speaker Paul Hillegonds successfully managed a historic 55-55 tie in the Michigan House of Representatives, turning potential gridlock into an era of unprecedented productivity.Bipartisan Policy Victories: The inner workings behind major structural reforms, including the creation of the Michigan Education Trust (MET), Proposal A school funding reform, the Michigan Criminal Defense Commission, and the construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. The Human Element of Governance: Real-world lessons on how personal trust, open communication, and cross-party networking allowed ideological adversaries to achieve mutual gains for Michigan citizens.Institutional Accountability: The vital role of the Capitol Press Corps and historical preservation in keeping government transparent and grounded.Far from being a simple work of political nostalgia, Across the Aisle serves as a practical handbook for current and aspiring public servants, political scientists, and voters. It delivers a grounded blueprint showing that constructive debate, mutual respect, and institutional stewardship remain the most reliable paths toward solving complex societal problems. Compiled & Edited by Fritz Benson and Michael Ranville Charles "Fritz" Benson retired in 2010 after a 31-year career as a partner in the multi-client lobbying firm, Michigan Legislative Consultants (MLC). He came to MLC after serving on the staffs of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Thomas M. Kavanagh and two Senate majority leaders, Sen. Bill Fitzgerald and Sen. Bill Faust. Michael Ranville, a former Lansing lobbyist, had a proven track record of advocating for positive change in Michigan. His passion for effective governance is evident in his commitment to our project. He served as research director for the Democratic Senate staff and has authored two books, "To Strike at a King: The Turning Point in the McCarthy Witch-Hunts," and "Life to the Years" written with his cardiologist Dr. Michael James. The publishers are saddened to report that Mike passed away in 2025.
