When Cassandra's mother is killed in battle, she is forced into an impossible choice: whether or not to risk her life in order to bond with her mother's dragon, Temek-the largest in the world. Should she attempt to form the bond and succeed, wealth and care will be secured for her family for another generation. Should she refuse, she and her kin will be cast to the streets, left to wallow and starve in the gutters amongst the other peasants. With little time to decide, Cassandra makes her choice, the consequences of which thrust her into a horrific torrent of pain, betrayal, and political manipulation. And with her decision, a far more horrific choice is forced upon her, calling into question her ethics and her willingness to sacrifice.
