A-LEVEL SOCIOLOGY: THE QUESTION IS...: THINKING BEHIND SUBJECT

How much of who we are genuinely belongs to us, and how much has been shaped by the society around us? A-level Sociology: The Question Is... sets aside theories and case studies and asks the questions that sit underneath them. Are our choices genuinely free, or are they shaped by social structures we barely perceive? Can a sociologist studying their own society ever achieve genuine objectivity? Are categories such as class, gender, and ethnicity realities that sociology discovers, or constructions that sociology itself helps to reinforce? Across twenty-five carefully clustered questions, this guide takes A-level Sociology students beyond procedure and into genuine philosophical territory, exploring the relationship between structure and agency, the difficulty of establishing causation in complex social systems, and the assumptions hidden inside the categories used to describe society. It also considers the responsibilities of sociologists, the possibility of meaningful social change, and the strange relationship between sociological knowledge and the society it studies. Each question is designed to provoke real classroom discussion, deepen critical appreciation of the subject, and support the kind of independent, evaluative thinking valued at the highest levels of study. Written for students who already know how to apply sociological theories and are ready to ask what those theories might leave out, this book is equally suited to teachers looking for a discussion starter, or to anyone curious about the invisible structures shaping everyday life. No prior philosophical background is required, only curiosity and a willingness to question what the syllabus usually takes for granted. Book 7 in The A-Level Question Is... series: 25 subjects, 25 questions each, one simple goal: sharper thinking.
