On August 18th, 1914, the Germans occupied Louvain in Belgium. Among the refugees fleeing the city was Julian Hydon, a young Jesuit priest. When he witnessed the brutal roadside killing of a scholastic, Eugene Dupierreux, he determined to join the war, which he did as an Army Chaplain. His sense of mission turned to disillusion, doubt and anger after spending the last hours with a deserter, and accompanying him to his execution. He publicly criticises the sentence, becomes involved with the deserter's girlfriend, and is rejected by the Army and the Church. Isolated he seeks redemption in anonimity and battle.
