For this collection, I examined more than 30,000 photographs taken over the course of my thirty-year career as an English language professor in Japan. Selecting the right images proved challenging, not only because each photograph needed to inspire one or more haiku poems, but also because it needed to hold personal significance while offering something meaningful or insightful to readers. The result, as reflected in these pages, suggests that our finest moments are often unplanned, improvised, and wonderfully ordinary.
