A God Pleasing Life

In A God-Pleasing Life, Saint Theophan the Recluse offers a profound and practical guide to living every aspect of life in the presence of God. He shows how repentance, obedience, prayer, self-denial, the struggle against the passions, and the faithful fulfilment of our daily duties lead the soul toward spiritual renewal and the acquisition of virtue. Rather than seeking holiness apart from ordinary life, Saint Theophan teaches that our circumstances, responsibilities, trials, and personal crosses can themselves become a path to salvation when received with faith, humility, and surrender to God. With characteristic clarity, he explains the proper order of spiritual growth, beginning with repentance and progressing through the purification of the heart toward genuine love of God and neighbour. His words continually call the Christian away from outward piety alone and toward an inner transformation in which good deeds and the disposition of the heart are brought into harmony. Rich in spiritual wisdom and encouragement, this collection reveals how the ordinary struggles of Christian life can become the very means by which the soul learns to please God and prepares itself for eternal life.
