The years these poems cover presented something humans had never experienced. War and cruelty have always been with us; but now those outside the battlefield, far from the lands besieged, watched the truth of displacement and death in real time, and so we knew unfolded before us realities the past did not assert until after events. Thus Gaza became a pivot of conscience, of denial, of despair - and often, incredulity. Could evil be so freely permitted? These poems seek to capture, simply, the reality of this place fated by history and the present course of nations, to be the mirror too much of humanity never wanted.
